Which Flea Treatments Also Treat Tapeworms in Cats?

Finding one product that protects your cat against several parasites can make monthly prevention much simpler. However, parasite coverage varies considerably between products.

If you are specifically looking for a flea treatment for cats with tapeworms, it's important to check the active ingredients and exact label indications. A product may cover fleas, heartworm, roundworms, and hookworms while providing no treatment for an existing tapeworm infection.

Why Are Fleas and Tapeworms Connected?

One of the most common feline tapeworms, Dipylidium caninum, relies on fleas as part of its life cycle.

Cats can become infected when they swallow an infected flea while grooming. This is why effective flea prevention is an important part of controlling recurring tapeworm infections.

However, killing fleas and killing adult tapeworms already living in the cat’s intestine are not necessarily the same thing.

For an existing Dipylidium caninum infection, praziquantel is one of the commonly recommended tapeworm treatments.

Which Flea Treatment for Cats With Tapeworms Provides the Broadest Coverage?

Among the products compared below, NexGard COMBO is the option specifically labeled in the U.S. to treat and control Dipylidium caninum tapeworms while also providing flea protection.

Here is a simple comparison:

Parasite

NexGard COMBO

Revolution Plus

Bravecto Plus

Advantage Multi

Fleas

Ticks

Roundworms

Hookworms

Tapeworm treatment

Heartworm prevention

Ear mites

Revolution Plus is labeled to prevent Dipylidium caninum infections by killing the flea vector, but it does not treat an existing adult tapeworm infection.

Product indications can differ between countries, so always check the packaging and prescribing information for the exact product sold in your market.

NexGard COMBO

NexGard COMBO is a monthly topical treatment containing esafoxolaner, eprinomectin and praziquantel.

Its covers:

The presence of praziquantel is particularly important when choosing a flea treatment for cats with tapeworms.

Unlike products that primarily reduce tapeworm risk by controlling fleas, NexGard COMBO is labeled to actually treat and control Dipylidium caninum.

For owners wanting broad parasite coverage from one monthly topical treatment, NexGard COMBO is an option worth discussing with a veterinarian.

Revolution Plus

Revolution Plus contains selamectin and sarolaner and provides broad monthly parasite protection.

It treats or protects against:

There is an important tapeworm distinction.

Revolution Plus is labeled to prevent Dipylidium caninum infection by killing the flea vector. It does not contain praziquantel and is not labeled to eliminate an existing adult tapeworm infection.

Therefore, a cat that already has tapeworms may require a separate appropriate deworming treatment.

Bravecto Plus

Bravecto Plus combines fluralaner and moxidectin.

It protects against

  • Fleas and ticks for two months
  • Prevents heartworm disease
  • Treats roundworm
  • Treats hookworm infections

If your cat already has tapeworms, Bravecto Plus should therefore not be assumed to replace a tapeworm-specific dewormer.

Advantage Multi for Cats

Advantage Multi contains imidacloprid and moxidectin.

It provides monthly protection against:

  • Fleas and heartworms
  • Treating and controlling ear mites
  • Roundworms
  • Hookworms

This is another good example of why an “all-in-one” parasite medicine does not automatically mean that every intestinal worm is covered.

What Should You Use If Your Cat Already Has Tapeworms?

If you can see small rice-like segments around your cat’s rear, bedding, or stool, contact your veterinarian for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

When selecting a flea treatment for cats with tapeworms, you generally need to think about two problems:

  1. Treat the existing tapeworm infection
  2. Control fleas to reduce the chance of reinfection

Treating the worms but leaving a flea infestation untreated can allow the cycle to begin again. CAPC specifically recommends combining tapeworm treatment with effective flea control.

Can Revolution Plus Prevent Tapeworms?

Yes, but there is an important qualification.

Revolution Plus can help prevent Dipylidium caninum infections because it kills the fleas responsible for transmitting this tapeworm. Its U.S. indication specifically includes prevention resulting from flea-vector control.

However, that is different from treating tapeworms that are already present.

Which Option Offers Flea and Tapeworm Treatment Together?

Among NexGard COMBO, Revolution Plus, Bravecto Plus and Advantage Multi, NexGard COMBO is the product with a U.S. label indication for both flea control and treatment and control of Dipylidium caninum tapeworms.

That makes it particularly relevant when owners want a flea treatment for cats with tapeworms rather than using separate flea and tapeworm products.

The best parasite prevention plan still depends on your cat’s age, weight, health, lifestyle and local parasite risks. Always use the correct cat-specific product and follow the veterinarian’s instructions and the product label.

Final Thoughts

Not every broad-spectrum flea medicine protects against tapeworms in the same way.

Some treatments kill fleas and therefore reduce the opportunity for flea-transmitted tapeworm infections. Others also contain an ingredient that directly treats the tapeworm itself.

When choosing a flea treatment for cats with tapeworms, check the exact parasites listed on the product label rather than assuming “all-in-one” means complete worm coverage. For cats needing flea protection and treatment of Dipylidium caninum in one product, NexGard COMBO provides one of the most comprehensive combinations among the products compared here.

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

Customer photo review of Revolution Plus For Medium Cats 5.6-11 lbs (2.6-5kg)

Last year, I made a visit to the vet. I told them that Kattie/cat had ear mites. They gave me an ointment costing $80canadian. I used it up and purchased another bottle. $160. total not including the cost of the vet visit. No results. The ear mites have been there for a long time. Canadian vets have control of what is sold in Pet stores and you cannot purchase off the shelf products not recognized by them. I jumped at the chance to purchase your produce with a recommended 100% effectivity. I was willing to try, but was suspicions. After a month there was still a little scratching but after 6 weeks, the mites are gone and the scratching is gone. Thank you very much for this mite solution. I recommend it heartily. Harry P.S. Do not tell the Canadian vets as they will outlaw your product.
