Why Flea Treatment in Winter Is More Important Than You Think

Many pet owners believe fleas are only a problem from spring to fall. But do these tiny pests disappear in winter? The short answer is no! While fleas may become less active in colder temperatures, they don’t completely vanish. Your pet is still at risk of an infestation, even during winter.

In this blog, we’ll explain why flea prevention is necessary year-round and how to protect your furry companion from these persistent parasites.

Do Fleas Survive in Winter?

Contrary to popular belief, cold weather does not eliminate fleas—it only slows their life cycle. Flea eggs can survive freezing temperatures and continue to hatch throughout winter. While adult fleas may die in extreme cold, many find warm places indoors, such as carpets, pet bedding, and furniture, allowing them to thrive even in winter.

Without proper flea prevention, these hidden pests can infest your home and become a problem as soon as temperatures rise. That’s why continuous flea treatment is essential, no matter the season.

Stay tuned for expert tips on preventing flea infestations during winter and keeping your pet safe and comfortable all year round.

Winter Flea Prevention: How to Keep Your Pet Safe Year-Round

Many pet owners assume fleas disappear in winter, but that’s not true. These persistent parasites find ways to survive and can still infest your pet, even in colder months. Understanding how fleas spread during winter and taking proactive measures can help keep your pet and home flea-free all year round.

How Do Pets Get Fleas in Winter?

Fleas remain a threat even when temperatures drop. Here’s how they manage to infest pets during winter:

  • Warm Indoor Environments – Your heated home provides the perfect shelter for fleas to thrive, allowing them to stay active even in the cold season.
  • Wildlife Carriers – Stray animals like squirrels, raccoons, and feral cats can carry fleas into your yard, increasing the risk of infestation.
  • Vet Visits & Outdoor Exposure – Your pet can pick up fleas from vet clinics, pet-friendly parks, or even brief outdoor walks.

Why Flea Treatment Is Important in Winter

Skipping flea prevention during winter can put your pet’s health at risk. Here’s why year-round protection is essential:

  • Prevents Skin Issues – Flea infestations cause itching, skin infections, and allergic reactions, leading to discomfort for your pet.
  • Stops Home & Yard Infestations – If untreated, fleas can spread throughout your home and yard, making future outbreaks harder to control.
  • Protects Against Flea-Borne Diseases – Fleas can transmit tapeworms and other infections, making continuous treatment crucial for your pet’s well-being.

How to Prevent Fleas in Winter

Avoiding a flea infestation is much simpler than eliminating one. Take these proactive steps to safeguard your pet and home from fleas:

1. Continue Year-Round Flea Treatment

Even in winter, using flea preventatives ensures your pet remains protected. Talk to your Veterinarian for the best treatment options for your pet.

2. Maintain a Clean Home

  • Wash pet bedding, blankets, and soft furnishings every two to three weeks.
  • Vacuum carpets, upholstery, and floors regularly to eliminate flea eggs and larvae.
  • Keep your pet’s living area clean and clutter-free.

3. Use Flea Treatments for Your Home & Yard

  • Consider flea sprays or treatments for your home to kill hidden eggs and larvae.
  • If your pet spends time in the yard, ensure the outdoor area is treated to prevent infestations.

4. Regularly Check Your Pet for Fleas

Check your pet regularly for flea activity, even during winter. Watch for signs like frequent scratching or small black specks in their fur. Catching fleas early can help prevent a widespread infestation.

Final Thoughts

Year-round flea prevention is essential for keeping your pet healthy and comfortable. By maintaining a consistent flea control routine, ensuring a clean home, and staying vigilant, you can protect your furry friend from fleas in every season. Don’t wait for warmer months—take action now to keep fleas away for good!

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

Last year, I made a visit to the vet. I told them that Kattie/cat had ear mites. They gave me an ointment costing $80canadian. I used it up and purchased another bottle. $160. total not including the cost of the vet visit. No results. The ear mites have been there for a long time. Canadian vets have control of what is sold in Pet stores and you cannot purchase off the shelf products not recognized by them. I jumped at the chance to purchase your produce with a recommended 100% effectivity. I was willing to try, but was suspicions. After a month there was still a little scratching but after 6 weeks, the mites are gone and the scratching is gone. Thank you very much for this mite solution. I recommend it heartily. Harry P.S. Do not tell the Canadian vets as they will outlaw your product.
