Summer Wellness for Indoor Cats: Keep Them Cool, Happy, and Active

Introduction

Summer heat can be tough, not just for humans but also for our feline companions. While indoor cats are protected from the blazing sun, they’re still at risk of overheating and boredom during the warmer months. As a pet parent, keeping your indoor cat cool and mentally stimulated is essential to maintain their overall health and happiness.

In this blog, we’ll explore effective ways to ensure your cat stays comfortable and active throughout the summer without needing to step outside.

1. Create a Cool and Comfortable Space

Indoor cats often gravitate toward warm spots, but they’ll look for cooler surfaces in summer. Ensure they can access cool areas like tiled floors or shaded corners. You can also:

  • Use cooling mats specifically designed for pets.
  • Draw the curtains or lower the blinds during the hottest parts of the day to block direct sunlight and keep your indoor space cooler for your cat.
  • Set up a fan or air purifier to circulate air gently—cats love light breezes!

If your home lacks air conditioning, you can help your cat stay cool by placing frozen water bottles wrapped in a soft towel in their favorite resting spots. These makeshift coolers offer a safe, refreshing place for your cat to relax during hot days.

2. Hydration is Key

Cats naturally drink less water than dogs, but summer dehydration can be dangerous. Encourage your cat to drink more by:

  • Adding extra water bowls throughout the house.
  • Try a cat water fountain to encourage your feline to drink more. The flowing water often attracts their interest.
  • Enhance hydration by adding a small amount of wet food or unsalted, onion-free broth to your cat’s regular meals.

Ensure all water bowls are kept clean and refilled with fresh, cool water multiple times daily.

3. Frozen Treats and Cool Snacks

Give your cat some delicious relief from the heat with pet-safe frozen treats. Some ideas include:

  • Frozen tuna water cubes (from tuna in water, not oil)
  • Frozen chicken broth popsicles (low-sodium, pet-safe)
  • Chilled pureed pumpkin or small portions of watermelon (no seeds)

These cool your cat down and serve as fun, interactive snacks.

4. Interactive Toys to Keep Them Active

Cats need physical activity to prevent boredom and maintain a healthy weight. But hot weather can make them sluggish. Keep playtime fun and safe by:

  • Scheduling short play sessions in the early morning or late evening.
  • Offering battery-powered or motion-sensitive toys that they can chase without much effort.
  • Using cat tunnels, puzzle feeders, or treat-dispensing toys to stimulate them mentally.

Rotate toys weekly to keep things exciting.

5. Cool Grooming Tips for Summer

Excess fur can make your cat feel even warmer. Regular grooming can help them stay cool and prevent shedding-related hairballs.

  • Brush your cat daily, especially if they have a long coat.
  • Use grooming tools that help remove loose undercoat fur.
  • Never shave your cat unless advised by a vet—fur actually protects against sunburn and overheating.

If your cat dislikes grooming, use gloves that feel more like petting than brushing.

6. Create Elevated Lounging Spots

Warm air rises, but raised furniture like window perches or cat trees can help catch breezes from fans or air vents. These spots also give your cat a view of the outside world, keeping them entertained without stepping outdoors.

Place these elevated beds in shaded areas or near a slightly opened (screened) window for maximum comfort.

7. Know the Signs of Heat Stress in Cats

Even indoors, cats can overheat. Keep an eye out for these signs of heat stress:

  • Excessive panting
  • Lethargy
  • Drooling
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Vomiting

If you observe any of these warning signs, relocate your cat to a cooler spot, provide fresh water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Conclusion

Summers can be a challenge for indoor cats, but with the proper care, your feline friend can stay cool, healthy, and happy all season long. Small changes can make a big difference, whether a cozy cooling mat, a new interactive toy, or refreshing treats.

By following these simple tips, you'll help your cat beat the heat and enhance its overall well-being year-round.

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

After Seresto collars failed to get rid of fleas, I didn't know where to turn. I saw a post on a page I follow (Kentucky Kitty Cats) saying that they use Nexgard Combo for the cats they shelter. I decided to try it and IT WORKS!

Last year, I made a visit to the vet. I told them that Kattie/cat had ear mites. They gave me an ointment costing $80canadian. I used it up and purchased another bottle. $160. total not including the cost of the vet visit. No results. The ear mites have been there for a long time. Canadian vets have control of what is sold in Pet stores and you cannot purchase off the shelf products not recognized by them. I jumped at the chance to purchase your produce with a recommended 100% effectivity. I was willing to try, but was suspicions. After a month there was still a little scratching but after 6 weeks, the mites are gone and the scratching is gone. Thank you very much for this mite solution. I recommend it heartily. Harry P.S. Do not tell the Canadian vets as they will outlaw your product.
