How to Tell if Your Dog Is Pregnant: Signs, Symptoms, and Care Tips

Introduction

For many pet owners, the thought of their dog becoming pregnant can bring a mix of excitement and curiosity. Whether you are planning for puppies or want to understand your dog’s health better, knowing the early signs of pregnancy is important. Unlike humans, dogs cannot verbally express how they feel, so you need to observe physical changes and behavioral clues. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the most common signs of pregnancy in dogs, what to expect during this time, and how you can provide the proper care.

Early Signs of Pregnancy in Dogs

During the first few weeks, pregnancy may not be very obvious. However, some subtle signs can give you clues:

1. Changes in Appetite

A pregnant dog may experience changes in appetite. Some dogs eat less in the early stages due to nausea, while others may show an increased appetite. Monitoring her eating habits is an important first step.

2. Behavioral Shifts

Pregnant dogs often become more affectionate, seeking extra attention from their owners. On the other hand, some may prefer solitude and spend more time resting away from family members.

3. Fatigue and Reduced Activity

If your usually energetic dog appears more tired than usual, it could be an early sign of pregnancy. Extra rest helps her body adjust to the changes.

Physical Signs of Dog Pregnancy

As the pregnancy progresses, physical symptoms become more noticeable.

1. Enlarged or Darkened Nipples

By the third week, your dog’s nipples may look larger, and the surrounding area (areola) can become darker. Later in pregnancy, they may even start producing a small amount of milk.

2. Weight Gain and Enlarged Abdomen

Around the fourth or fifth week, your dog’s belly will gradually become larger and firmer. This is one of the most evident signs of pregnancy.

3. Clear Vaginal Discharge

Some pregnant dogs develop a clear discharge in the later stages of pregnancy. If the discharge is colored, foul-smelling, or excessive, consult a veterinarian immediately.

Confirming Pregnancy: Veterinary Methods

While observing symptoms can give you clues, only a veterinarian can confirm pregnancy with accuracy. Here are common methods used:

  • Ultrasound: Detects puppies as early as three weeks after mating.
  • Palpation: A skilled vet can gently feel the abdomen to detect small puppy sacs at around 28–35 days.
  • X-rays: Around day 45, X-rays can show the number of puppies.
  • Hormone Tests: Blood tests can confirm pregnancy by checking for the hormone relaxin.

How Long Are Dogs Pregnant?

The average dog pregnancy lasts about 63 days (nine weeks). However, this can vary slightly depending on breed and litter size. Smaller breeds may have shorter gestation periods, while larger breeds can carry for a somewhat longer period.

Caring for a Pregnant Dog

Providing the proper care during pregnancy is crucial for your dog’s health and the well-being of her puppies.

1. Nutrition and Diet

  • Switch to a high-quality, nutrient-rich diet.
  • In the later weeks, feed smaller but more frequent meals since the growing puppies reduce stomach space.
  • Avoid giving supplements without veterinary advice.

2. Exercise

Gentle exercise is beneficial, but avoid excessive running or jumping. Short daily walks are ideal to keep her muscles strong without causing strain.

3. Veterinary Visits

Schedule regular vet check-ups to monitor her progress. Vaccinations and parasite prevention are also necessary during pregnancy.

4. Comfortable Resting Space

Provide a clean, quiet, and comfortable nesting area. As delivery nears, your dog will appreciate having a safe spot to rest.

Preparing for Whelping (Delivery)

When your dog’s delivery time is near, you might observe the following signs:

  • Nesting behavior, such as digging or arranging bedding.
  • Drop in body temperature (to around 99°F/37.2°C) about 24 hours before labor.
  • Restlessness and panting.

Keep your vet’s emergency number handy in case complications arise.

When to Call the Vet Immediately

Seek veterinary help if you notice:

  • Pushing for over 30 minutes without producing a puppy.
  • Green or foul-smelling discharge before the first puppy arrives.
  • Weakness, collapse, or excessive bleeding.

Prompt care can save both the mother and the puppies in emergencies.

Conclusion

Identifying the early signs of pregnancy in your dog is a crucial step in ensuring her well-being and preparing for the arrival of her puppies. From early appetite changes to visible physical signs, each stage of pregnancy brings unique indicators. Regular veterinary care, proper nutrition, and a calm environment will help your dog maintain its health throughout the process. By staying observant and supportive, you can make your dog’s pregnancy journey smooth and safe.

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

Last year, I made a visit to the vet. I told them that Kattie/cat had ear mites. They gave me an ointment costing $80canadian. I used it up and purchased another bottle. $160. total not including the cost of the vet visit. No results. The ear mites have been there for a long time. Canadian vets have control of what is sold in Pet stores and you cannot purchase off the shelf products not recognized by them. I jumped at the chance to purchase your produce with a recommended 100% effectivity. I was willing to try, but was suspicions. After a month there was still a little scratching but after 6 weeks, the mites are gone and the scratching is gone. Thank you very much for this mite solution. I recommend it heartily. Harry P.S. Do not tell the Canadian vets as they will outlaw your product.
