Headaches in Cats: Signs, Causes and Safe Care

A cat that suddenly hides, refuses food, or avoids being touched may be feeling unwell.

Headaches in cats are difficult to confirm because our feline companions cannot describe their discomfort. Instead of assuming your cat has a headache, watch for behavioral changes and ask your veterinarian to investigate.

Can Cats Get Headaches?

Cats can experience pain around the head, but headaches like those people describe are not easy to diagnose. Dental disease, ear problems, eye conditions, or injuries may cause discomfort that owners mistake for a headache.

Finding the underlying problem is the first step toward appropriate treatment.

Signs Your Cat May Be in Pain

Watch for changes from your cat’s usual routine, including:

  • Hiding or avoiding family members.
  • Eating or drinking less.
  • Squinting or holding the head low.
  • Becoming irritable when approached.
  • Restlessness or reduced interest in play.

These signs do not confirm headaches in cats. They can occur with many health conditions and deserve veterinary attention.

When to Seek Urgent Veterinary Help

Repeatedly pressing the head against a wall or furniture requires urgent veterinary assessment. This is different from an affectionate head bump and can indicate serious illness. Seek immediate help for seizures, collapse, difficulty breathing, or loss of balance.

How to Keep Your Cat Comfortable

While arranging veterinary advice, offer a quiet resting area with easy access to fresh water and a litter tray. Avoid repeatedly touching a sensitive area, and record when the changes started.

Never give paracetamol, ibuprofen, or other human painkillers to your cat. Paracetamol can be fatal, and other pain medicines can also cause serious harm. Use only treatment prescribed for your cat.

Make Everyday Care Easier

Managing suspected headaches in cats starts with veterinary guidance. For routine care, keep a simple calendar of health checks and vet-recommended parasite treatments.

Planning your next refill? Explore 79Pets for cat parasite-care options, and choose a product that fits your cat’s age, weight, and your vet's advice. Parasite preventives do not treat headaches or unexplained head pain.

These are my dogs Frankie, he’s 2 and Roxy, she’s 6! They are outside all the time and we have woods behind the house. They never get fleas or ticks or anything else! Very happy with this product.

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

After Seresto collars failed to get rid of fleas, I didn't know where to turn. I saw a post on a page I follow (Kentucky Kitty Cats) saying that they use Nexgard Combo for the cats they shelter. I decided to try it and IT WORKS!

This is Lexi Marie! She was wondering why mom was so excited for buying flea medicine. I explained to her that we saved $100 and that she would understand some day when she grows up.
