What Should You Do If Heartworm Prevention Is Given Late?
A missed treatment date can happen, but acting quickly helps protect your pet. Late heartworm prevention may leave a gap in protection, so check the dates and contact your veterinarian.
What Should You Do First?
If you have already given the late dose, record the date and do not give an extra dose to catch up. Tell your vet:
The product name and your pet’s weight.
When the previous dose was given.
When the delayed dose was administered.
Whether any other doses were missed.
If the dose is still overdue, contact your vet promptly about restarting. The American Heartworm Society recommends promptly resuming monthly prevention following a lapse, alongside veterinary guidance and follow-up testing. An overdue preventive injection needs a veterinary appointment.
Does a Late Dose Mean Your Pet Has Heartworms?
No. A late heartworm dose does not automatically mean an infection has occurred. However, a delay can let mosquito-transmitted heartworm larvae develop beyond the stages preventive medicines effectively target.
There is no universal “safe” number of days to be late. The product, length of the gap, and your pet’s exposure all matter.
Will Your Dog Need a Heartworm Test?
Following a lapse, the American Heartworm Society recommends testing dogs promptly, repeating the test six months later, and continuing annual testing.
An immediate negative result cannot rule out an infection acquired during the recent gap because heartworms take months to become detectable. Your vet will confirm the appropriate schedule for your dog.
For cats, ask your veterinarian for a species-specific testing and prevention plan.
How Can You Avoid Another Missed Dose?
Keeping prevention consistent is easier with a simple routine:
Set a recurring phone reminder.
Record each dose after giving it.
Reorder before the final dose runs out.
Confirm the next treatment date with your vet after a delay.
If heartworm prevention is given late, review your routine and arrange appropriate follow-up.
Keep Your Pet’s Protection on Track
Planning your next refill? Browse pet parasite-care products at 79pets and choose the option your veterinarian recommends. Check the label for heartworm coverage, species, age, and weight—flea treatments and ordinary intestinal dewormers do not automatically prevent heartworm.
These are my dogs Frankie, he’s 2 and Roxy, she’s 6! They are outside all the time and we have woods behind the house. They never get fleas or ticks or anything else! Very happy with this product.
This on-line company is such a good find. They provide quality products at a good price with delivering them efficiently. Definitely recommend purchasing from them.
Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.
As a retired veterinary technician I was extremely happy to finally see a flea and heartworm medication that actually does tapeworms too!!!!!!! This is a 1st to my knowledge....I live in a tropical climate where fleas never die so this is heaven sent.
Great price, authentic quality and reliable shipping. Shipping takes a bit longer, since it is being shipped from abroad. But still a reliable service.
After Seresto collars failed to get rid of fleas, I didn't know where to turn. I saw a post on a page I follow (Kentucky Kitty Cats) saying that they use Nexgard Combo for the cats they shelter. I decided to try it and IT WORKS!
This is Lexi Marie! She was wondering why mom was so excited for buying flea medicine. I explained to her that we saved $100 and that she would understand some day when she grows up.
