3 Ways Fleas Can Affect Your Pet's Health

Our beloved pets bring us immeasurable joy, companionship, and unconditional love. As responsible pet owners, we must ensure their well-being and protect them from threats. While we may diligently care for their diet, exercise, and grooming needs, flea infestation is one often overlooked menace that can severely affect our furry companions. Fleas, those tiny, agile parasites, cause discomfort and can lead to significant health problems for our pets if left unchecked. Let's delve deeper into three pet health problems fleas can cause, understanding the importance of prevention and treatment.

Skin Irritations and Allergic Reactions

Flea bites aren't just annoying; they can trigger severe allergic reactions in some pets. When a flea bites, it injects saliva into the pet's skin, containing various proteins that can cause irritation and allergic responses. Pets may incessantly scratch, bite, or lick themselves to alleviate the itching, leading to raw, inflamed skin, hot spots, and hair loss. In some cases, pets may develop flea allergy dermatitis (FAD), a common allergic skin disease resulting from flea bites. FAD can manifest as intense itching, redness, and scabbing, significantly compromising your pet's comfort and quality of life.

Anemia

Anemia, characterized by a decrease in red blood cell count or hemoglobin levels, can be a severe consequence of flea infestation, particularly in young or small pets. Fleas feed on blood, and severe infestations can lead to significant blood loss over time, especially in vulnerable individuals. Anemic pets may exhibit lethargy, weakness, pale gums, and rapid breathing. Severe anemia can be life-threatening if left untreated, emphasizing the importance of prompt flea control measures and veterinary intervention.

Transmission of Parasites and Diseases

Fleas aren't just nuisance pests and serve as vectors for various parasites and diseases, posing additional health risks to our pets. Fleas can transmit tapeworms when ingested during grooming, leading to pet intestinal infestations. Moreover, fleas can carry and transmit pathogens such as Bartonella, the bacteria responsible for causing diseases like cat scratch fever in cats. Additionally, flea-borne typhus and murine typhus are bacterial infections that can be transmitted to both pets and humans through flea bites, highlighting the interconnectedness of pet and human health in flea control efforts.

If your pet has tapeworms, don't worry! Try Sentinel Spectrum for dogs or Drontal for cats and dogs. These treatments not only get rid of tapeworms but also prevent other intestinal worms. Sentinel Spectrum also tackles adult fleas for a whole month, giving your pet double the protection against pesky parasites!

Protecting Your Pet: Prevention and Treatment

Preventing flea infestations is critical to safeguarding your pet's health and well-being. Regular use of veterinarian-recommended flea preventatives, such as topical treatmentsoral medications, or flea collars, can effectively repel fleas and prevent them from establishing on your pet. Additionally, maintaining a clean and hygienic environment by regularly vacuuming carpets, washing pet bedding, and grooming your pet can help reduce flea populations in your home. If your pet experiences flea-related health problems, consult your veterinarian for appropriate treatment options tailored to your pet's specific needs.

Looking for a simple way to protect your furry friend from fleas? Look no further! Meet Bravecto, the oral flea treatment for dogs, and Bravecto topical for cats. Both are super easy to use and super effective. One dose kills fleas, eggs, and larvae and keeps your pet flea-free for up to 12 weeks. No more worrying about new infestations!

By staying vigilant and proactive and seeking veterinary guidance when needed, we can protect our pets from the perils of flea infestation and foster a safe and thriving environment for them.

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

Customer photo review of Revolution Plus For Medium Cats 5.6-11 lbs (2.6-5kg)

Last year, I made a visit to the vet. I told them that Kattie/cat had ear mites. They gave me an ointment costing $80canadian. I used it up and purchased another bottle. $160. total not including the cost of the vet visit. No results. The ear mites have been there for a long time. Canadian vets have control of what is sold in Pet stores and you cannot purchase off the shelf products not recognized by them. I jumped at the chance to purchase your produce with a recommended 100% effectivity. I was willing to try, but was suspicions. After a month there was still a little scratching but after 6 weeks, the mites are gone and the scratching is gone. Thank you very much for this mite solution. I recommend it heartily. Harry P.S. Do not tell the Canadian vets as they will outlaw your product.
