I want real image, not animation

Pumpkin is healthy for humans, and dogs can eat it safely. When given appropriately, pumpkin offers several health benefits for dogs.
Not all pumpkin products are safe for dogs. This guide covers feeding pumpkin—its benefits, risks, and best ways to serve it.

Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin?

Yes, dogs can eat pumpkin, and it is generally considered safe when served plain and cooked. Pumpkin is low in calories, rich in fiber, and packed with essential vitamins.
Vets often suggest pumpkin for mild digestive issues. Use it as a supplement—not as a main food.

Health Benefits of Pumpkin for Dogs

Pumpkin can offer health benefits for dogs when fed properly.

1. Supports Digestive Health

Pumpkin is high in soluble fiber, which helps regulate bowel movements.

  • It can firm up loose stools in dogs with diarrhea.
  • It may ease constipation by adding bulk to stool.
This makes pumpkin one of the most commonly vet-recommended foods for digestive balance.

2. Helps Maintain a Healthy Weight

Pumpkin is low in fat and calories but high in fiber, helping dogs feel full and supporting weight management.

3. Promotes Gut Health

Pumpkin is a prebiotic that supports healthy gut bacteria and digestion.

4. Rich in Essential Vitamins and Minerals

Pumpkin contains essential nutrients such as:

  • Vitamin A – supports eye health and immunity.
  • Vitamin C & E – antioxidants that reduce inflammation
  • Potassium – supports muscle and nerve function.
  • Iron – helps with oxygen transport in the blood.

5. Supports Skin and Coat Health

Pumpkin’s antioxidants may help coat shine and support healthy skin.

Can Puppies Eat Pumpkin?

Puppies can eat small amounts of pumpkin. Introduce it gradually and use it occasionally.
Always consult your veterinarian before adding new foods to a puppy’s diet.

Best Types of Pumpkin for Dogs

Not all pumpkin products are dog-friendly. Some are safe, and some should be avoided. Here are the options:

  • Plain cooked pumpkin
  • 100% canned pumpkin (unsweetened)
  • Steamed or boiled fresh pumpkin

❌ Pumpkin to Avoid

  • Pumpkin pie filling
  • Pumpkin with added sugar, salt, or spices
  • Raw pumpkin in large amounts
  • Pumpkin desserts or baked goods
Pumpkin pie filling often contains nutmeg, which is toxic to dogs.

How Much Pumpkin Can Dogs Eat?

Portion size depends on your dog’s size:

  • Small dogs: 1–2 teaspoons per day
  • Medium dogs: 1–2 tablespoons per day
  • Large dogs: Up to ¼ cup per day
Start with a small amount and watch for changes.

Can Pumpkin Cause Side Effects in Dogs?

While pumpkin is safe for most dogs, too much can cause:

  • Loose stools
  • Stomach upset
  • Too much pumpkin can lead to excess vitamin A.
If your dog vomits, has diarrhea, or is uncomfortable after eating pumpkin, stop and call your veterinarian.

Is Pumpkin Good for Dogs With Diarrhea?

Yes, pumpkin is commonly used to help manage mild diarrhea. The soluble fiber absorbs excess water in the digestive tract and helps firm stools naturally.
If diarrhea lasts more than 24–48 hours, or your dog becomes dehydrated or lethargic, see your veterinarian immediately.

Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin Seeds?

Plain, roasted, unsalted pumpkin seeds are safe in moderation. Avoid raw or seasoned seeds.
Never give raw or seasoned pumpkin seeds.

When Should You Avoid Feeding Pumpkin to Dogs?

Pumpkin may not be suitable for dogs with:

  • Certain food sensitivities
  • Chronic digestive conditions (unless vet-approved)
  • Vitamin A-restricted diets
Always consult your veterinarian if your dog has ongoing health conditions.

Final Thoughts

Pumpkin supports digestion, weight management, and overall wellness when used correctly. Choose plain options and avoid sugar or spices.

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

Customer photo review of Revolution Plus For Medium Cats 5.6-11 lbs (2.6-5kg)

Last year, I made a visit to the vet. I told them that Kattie/cat had ear mites. They gave me an ointment costing $80canadian. I used it up and purchased another bottle. $160. total not including the cost of the vet visit. No results. The ear mites have been there for a long time. Canadian vets have control of what is sold in Pet stores and you cannot purchase off the shelf products not recognized by them. I jumped at the chance to purchase your produce with a recommended 100% effectivity. I was willing to try, but was suspicions. After a month there was still a little scratching but after 6 weeks, the mites are gone and the scratching is gone. Thank you very much for this mite solution. I recommend it heartily. Harry P.S. Do not tell the Canadian vets as they will outlaw your product.
