Is Black Pudding Safe for Dogs?

Black pudding is a popular food in many parts of the world, especially in the UK and Ireland. Made from pork blood, fat, oatmeal, and a blend of spices, it is savory, rich, and enjoyed by many humans. But as a responsible pet parent, you may wonder: Can dogs eat black pudding? Is it healthy, or could it be harmful?

In this comprehensive guide, we break down everything you need to know about feeding black pudding to your dog—its ingredients, risks, possible benefits, and safe serving tips. This simple yet detailed article will help you make the right choice for your pet’s diet.

What Is Black Pudding Made Of?

Before deciding whether dogs can eat black pudding, it’s important to understand what it contains. Although recipes vary, most black pudding includes:

  • Pork blood
  • Pork fat or beef fat
  • Oatmeal or barley
  • Onions or onion powder (sometimes)
  • Salt
  • Spices like pepper, nutmeg, and herbs

While some of these ingredients are harmless for dogs, others can be dangerous, especially onions, high-fat content, and excessive salt.

Can Dogs Eat Black Pudding?

Technically, dogs can eat a very small amount of black pudding, but it is not recommended as a regular food or treat.

Here’s why:

✔ Very small quantities may not cause harm

A tiny piece given occasionally as a training reward usually won’t hurt your dog—especially if the black pudding does not contain onions.

✘ But it is not safe as a regular snack

Black pudding contains high levels of:

  • Fat
  • Salt
  • Spices
  • Possible onion additives

All of these can lead to health issues, making black pudding unsuitable as a daily treat.

Why Black Pudding Can Be Harmful for Dogs

1. High Fat Content

Black pudding is rich in animal fat. Dogs that consume too much fat can develop:

Pancreatitis can be severe and requires immediate veterinary attention.

2. Excessive Salt

Dogs are sensitive to salt, and black pudding often contains more salt than dogs can safely process.

High salt intake can cause:

3. Possible Onion or Garlic Content

Some recipes include onion or garlic—fresh or powdered—which are toxic to dogs.

Even small amounts can damage a dog's red blood cells and lead to hemolytic anemia, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition.

4. Spices and Seasonings

Black pudding is strongly seasoned. Spices such as nutmeg, pepper, and herbs can irritate a dog’s stomach, leading to:

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal discomfort

Nutmeg, in particular, contains myristicin, which can be toxic to dogs.

Are There Any Benefits for Dogs?

Black pudding does contain protein and iron, which are beneficial nutrients, but dogs can obtain these safely from:

  • Lean meats
  • Commercial dog food
  • Vet-approved treats

The risks of black pudding outweigh any small nutritional benefit.

What Steps Should You Take If Your Dog Eats Black Pudding?

If your dog ate a small amount:

Stay calm. Most likely, your dog will be fine, especially if the black pudding did not contain onions. Monitor for:

If your dog ate a large quantity:

This may be dangerous due to fat, salt, and seasonings.

Contact your vet immediately if you notice:

Bring the ingredient list to the vet if possible.

Safe Alternatives to Black Pudding

If you want to reward your dog with delicious treats, choose safer options:

✔ Safe Treats for Dogs

  • Cooked chicken (unseasoned)
  • Lean beef or turkey
  • Carrot sticks
  • Apple slices (without seeds)
  • Commercial dog treats
  • Freeze-dried meat treats

These options provide flavor without the dangers of black pudding.

Can You Use Black Pudding for Dog Training?

Some dog trainers use tiny bits of black pudding as high-value rewards because dogs love the smell and taste.

If you choose to use it:

  • Ensure it contains no onion or garlic
  • Give very tiny amounts
  • Use it only occasionally
  • Avoid giving it to dogs with pancreatitis, obesity, or sensitive stomachs

There are healthier, high-value training treats available, such as cooked chicken or liver.

How Much Black Pudding Is Safe for Dogs?

If your dog must have a taste:

✔ Safe amount:

A pea-sized piece occasionally.

✘ Unsafe amount:

Any larger portion or frequent feeding.

Black pudding should never become part of your dog’s daily diet.

Which Dogs Should Never Eat Black Pudding?

The following dogs should altogether avoid black pudding:

These pets are more vulnerable to high-fat, salt, and spicy foods.

Final Verdict: Should Dogs Eat Black Pudding?

Black pudding is not a safe or healthy treat for dogs.

While a tiny piece might not cause harm, the risks—fat, salt, onions, and spices—make it unsuitable for regular feeding.

Many healthier, dog-friendly treats offer better nutrition without the risk.

For your dog’s safety, comfort, and long-term health, it is best to avoid black pudding and choose vet-approved snacks instead.

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

Last year, I made a visit to the vet. I told them that Kattie/cat had ear mites. They gave me an ointment costing $80canadian. I used it up and purchased another bottle. $160. total not including the cost of the vet visit. No results. The ear mites have been there for a long time. Canadian vets have control of what is sold in Pet stores and you cannot purchase off the shelf products not recognized by them. I jumped at the chance to purchase your produce with a recommended 100% effectivity. I was willing to try, but was suspicions. After a month there was still a little scratching but after 6 weeks, the mites are gone and the scratching is gone. Thank you very much for this mite solution. I recommend it heartily. Harry P.S. Do not tell the Canadian vets as they will outlaw your product.
