Essential Summer Safety Tips for Dogs: Keep Your Pet Cool, Comfortable, and Healthy

Summer brings sunshine, longer days, and more opportunities for outdoor adventures. But while warm weather can be enjoyable for you, it can also pose risks for your furry friend. Compared to people, dogs are much more vulnerable to high temperatures, and without proper precautions, they can suffer from heatstroke, dehydration, or burned paws. Being a caring pet owner means taking steps to keep your dog comfortable, healthy, and protected when the weather gets hot.

This guide offers simple and effective summer safety tips to help your furry friend stay safe from heat risks while still enjoying the sunshine.

1. Understand the Risks of Heat for Dogs

Unlike humans, dogs have a unique ability to regulate their body temperature. Unlike us, they don’t sweat all over their bodies; instead, they cool themselves mainly through panting and sweating slightly through their paw pads. This makes them more vulnerable to heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs include:

If you notice these symptoms, it’s critical to get veterinary help immediately.

2. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car

Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can skyrocket within minutes. On a warm day, the interior of a car can reach life-threatening levels in less than 10 minutes. Leaving your dog in a car, even for a short errand, can be fatal. If you’re heading somewhere dogs aren’t allowed, it’s safest to leave them at home in a calm environment.

3. Provide Plenty of Fresh Water and Shade

Dehydration is a common risk during summer. Make sure your dog always has access to fresh, cool water, whether indoors or outdoors. If you’re spending time outside, set up shaded areas where your dog can rest away from direct sunlight.

For extra refreshment, drop a few ice cubes into your dog’s water bowl, or bring along a pet-friendly portable water bottle to keep them hydrated during walks.

4. Walk During Cooler Hours

Regular exercise is essential for your dog’s health, but during hot days the timing is crucial. Skip midday outings when the sun is strongest, and opt for early morning or late evening walks when the temperatures are more comfortable.

Before heading out, check the pavement with your hand. If it’s too hot for you to hold your palm on for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Hot surfaces can cause painful burns, so stick to grassy areas or use dog booties for protection.

5. Adjust Their Exercise Routine

Dogs love to play, but overexertion in the heat can be dangerous. Shorten outdoor play sessions and keep activities less intense when temperatures are high. Swimming is a great low-impact exercise option for dogs that enjoy the water.

Remember that certain breeds, such as brachycephalic (short-nosed) dogs like Pugs, Bulldogs, and Shih Tzus, are especially prone to heat-related issues and require extra care.

6. Keep Up With Parasite Prevention

Summer is the prime season for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, which can transmit diseases like Lyme disease and heartworm. Make sure your dog is on a vet-approved preventive treatment to stay protected.

Regularly check your dog’s coat after outdoor activities, especially if they’ve been in grassy or wooded areas. You can spot and get rid of fleas at an early stage by using a flea comb regularly on your dog’s coat.

7. Protect Your Dog’s Skin and Paws

Dogs can get sunburned, particularly those with short or light-colored coats. Applying a pet-safe sunscreen to sensitive areas, such as the nose, ears, and belly, can help prevent burns.

For paw care, wash your dog’s feet after walks to remove dirt, heat, and possible chemical residues. Moisturizing paw balms can also help keep their pads healthy during summer.

8. Offer Cooling Solutions

There are many ways to help your dog stay cool in hot weather:

  • Provide cooling mats or beds.
  • Set up a kiddie pool for splashing.
  • Use a fan indoors to improve airflow.
  • Offer frozen treats made from dog-safe ingredients, such as watermelon or plain yogurt.

These simple measures can keep your pup comfortable and happy even on the hottest days.

9. Groom with Care

Proper grooming can make a huge difference in how well your dog copes with the heat. Regular brushing helps remove excess fur and promotes better airflow through their coat. However, avoid shaving your dog thoroughly, as their coat also provides protection against sunburn and helps regulate temperature.

Ask your groomer or veterinarian for the best grooming practices for your dog’s breed.

10. Schedule Regular Vet Checkups

Summer is an ideal time to ensure your dog is up to date on vaccinations and undergo regular health checks. Your veterinarian can provide personalized advice on parasite prevention, hydration, and overall health tailored to your dog’s specific needs. Regular visits help detect early signs of illness and keep your pet in optimal shape throughout the season.

Final Thoughts

Summer should be a time of joy and adventure for both you and your furry companion. By taking precautions—like avoiding hot cars, ensuring hydration, protecting their paws, and keeping up with parasite prevention—you can keep your dog safe and healthy.

Your pet relies on you to make the right decisions. With these summer safety tips, you’ll give your dog the best chance to beat the heat and enjoy the season comfortably.

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

After Seresto collars failed to get rid of fleas, I didn't know where to turn. I saw a post on a page I follow (Kentucky Kitty Cats) saying that they use Nexgard Combo for the cats they shelter. I decided to try it and IT WORKS!

Customer photo review of Revolution Plus For Medium Cats 5.6-11 lbs (2.6-5kg)

Last year, I made a visit to the vet. I told them that Kattie/cat had ear mites. They gave me an ointment costing $80canadian. I used it up and purchased another bottle. $160. total not including the cost of the vet visit. No results. The ear mites have been there for a long time. Canadian vets have control of what is sold in Pet stores and you cannot purchase off the shelf products not recognized by them. I jumped at the chance to purchase your produce with a recommended 100% effectivity. I was willing to try, but was suspicions. After a month there was still a little scratching but after 6 weeks, the mites are gone and the scratching is gone. Thank you very much for this mite solution. I recommend it heartily. Harry P.S. Do not tell the Canadian vets as they will outlaw your product.
