Dog Coughing: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Coughing in dogs is a common concern for pet owners. While an occasional cough may not be alarming, persistent coughing can indicate underlying health issues. Knowing the causes, recognizing the symptoms, and exploring treatment options can play a crucial role in keeping your dog healthy.

Common Causes of Coughing in Dogs

Several factors can lead to coughing in dogs. Some are mild and temporary, while others require veterinary attention.

  1. Kennel Cough (Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis)
    • AN extremely contagious respiratory infection caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica and other viruses.
    • Often seen in dogs that have been in shelters, kennels, or dog parks.
    • Characterized by a loud, honking cough.
  2. Canine Influenza (Dog Flu)
    • Viral infection causes cough, fever, nasal discharge, and lethargy.
    • It transmits through contact with infected dogs or contaminated surfaces.
  3. Heart Disease (Congestive Heart Failure)
    • Heart conditions may result in fluid accumulation in the lungs, causing a persistent, moist cough.
    • More common in older dogs or breeds prone to heart disease.
  4. Collapsing Trachea
    • More common in small breeds like Pomeranians, Yorkies, and Chihuahuas.
    • Causes a goose-honking cough, especially when excited or pulling on a leash.
  5. Pneumonia
    • Caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal infections.
    • Symptoms include a productive cough, fever, lethargy, and difficulty breathing.
  6. Allergies or Irritants
    • Dust, smoke, perfumes, or seasonal allergens can trigger coughing.
    • Dogs with allergies may also have watery eyes, itchy skin, and sneezing.
  7. Parasites (Heartworms, Lungworms)
    • Heartworms can cause coughing as they damage the lungs and heart.
    • Lungworms affect the respiratory tract, leading to persistent coughing.
  8. Foreign Objects or Obstructions
    • Dogs sometimes inhale small objects or food, leading to sudden, forceful coughing.
    • If choking or difficulty breathing occurs, seek emergency help immediately.

Symptoms to Watch for Along with Coughing

An occasional cough might not be alarming, but if you notice these accompanying symptoms, it could signal a more serious issue:

  • Persistent or worsening cough
  • Lethargy or weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Fever or nasal discharge
  • Gagging or retching after coughing

Treatment Options for Dog Coughing

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Here are some possible approaches:

  1. Veterinary Diagnosis
    • A vet visit is essential if your dog's cough lasts more than a few days.
    • The vet may conduct X-rays, blood tests, or heartworm tests to determine the cause.
  2. Medications
    • Antibiotics: For bacterial infections like pneumonia or kennel cough.
    • Cough suppressants: To relieve irritation (used only under veterinary guidance).
    • Heart medications: For heart disease-related coughing.
    • Dewormers: If parasites are causing the cough.
  3. Lifestyle Changes and Home Remedies
    • Use a humidifier: It helps soothe respiratory irritation.
    • Switch to a harness: Prevents tracheal collapse in small breeds.
    • Rest and hydration: Helps recovery from infections.
    • Reduce exposure to smoke, dust, or allergens.
  4. Vaccinations and Prevention
    • Regular vaccinations for kennel cough, canine flu, and distemper.
    • Monthly heartworm prevention.
    • Avoid contact with sick dogs in crowded places.

When to Seek Emergency Help

Seek immediate veterinary care if your dog:

  • Struggles to breathe or turns blue
  • Collapses or faints
  • Coughs up blood
  • Has a persistent, worsening cough despite treatment

Final Thoughts

A dog's cough can be a minor annoyance or a sign of a severe health issue. Keeping an eye on symptoms, getting prompt veterinary attention, and taking preventive steps are key to ensuring your dog's well-being. If the cough persists, it's best to consult a veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

After Seresto collars failed to get rid of fleas, I didn't know where to turn. I saw a post on a page I follow (Kentucky Kitty Cats) saying that they use Nexgard Combo for the cats they shelter. I decided to try it and IT WORKS!

Last year, I made a visit to the vet. I told them that Kattie/cat had ear mites. They gave me an ointment costing $80canadian. I used it up and purchased another bottle. $160. total not including the cost of the vet visit. No results. The ear mites have been there for a long time. Canadian vets have control of what is sold in Pet stores and you cannot purchase off the shelf products not recognized by them. I jumped at the chance to purchase your produce with a recommended 100% effectivity. I was willing to try, but was suspicions. After a month there was still a little scratching but after 6 weeks, the mites are gone and the scratching is gone. Thank you very much for this mite solution. I recommend it heartily. Harry P.S. Do not tell the Canadian vets as they will outlaw your product.
