Arthritis In Dogs – Signs, Symptoms, and Treatment

Many pet owners mistakenly attribute their dogs' joint issues to aging, which is understandable but inaccurate. As their caretakers, it's important to recognize these joint problems. We should acknowledge their condition and take appropriate steps to help them recover.

What Is Arthritis In Dogs?

Arthritis, or canine osteoarthritis, is a chronic joint disease in dogs characterized by inflammation, stiffness, and pain. Common causes of Arthritis in dogs include:

  • Joint injuries
  • Abnormal cartilage growth
  • Hip dysplasia (joint deformity)
  • Underdeveloped joints
  • Nutritional deficiencies

Symptoms And Signs Of Arthritis In Dogs

Arthritis is a gradually developing health condition; the symptoms surface slowly and worsen with time. Initially, a dog tends to slow down more than usual with its activity levels, including walking, playing, and avoiding physical activities, as the situation worsens for the pets. Common signs of arthritis in dogs include:

  • difficulty or Limping in walking
  • Stiff while getting up or sitting down
  • Reluctant to climb steps and jump
  • Swollen joints
  • Licking of painful areas
  • Sensitivity towards joints

How Vet Diagnosis Arthritis In Dogs?

If you observe any of these symptoms in your dog, it's essential to consult your veterinarian and share your observations. The veterinarian will probably perform a physical exam and may suggest additional tests to diagnose osteoarthritis, such as:

  • X-rays
  • Computed tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Treatment Of Arthritis In Dogs

Since Arthritis causes dogs significant pain, providing them with the proper treatment for relief is essential. However, medication alone isn't a permanent solution. Managing your dog's weight is the first step in treating canine osteoarthritis.

Here are some ways to manage Arthritis in dogs:

  • Keep a regular exercise with healthy weight and a balanced diet
  • Use natural joint care supplements or nutraceuticals (a blend of nutrition and pharmaceuticals)
  • Implement hydrotherapy and massage
  • Provide a high-quality orthopedic dog bed

The Bottom Line

Arthritis in dogs is a permanent joint condition that can't be entirely cured. However, with the right care and treatments outlined in this article, and in consultation with your veterinarian, the progression of joint deterioration can be managed. This strategy can help protect your dog's joint health from further deterioration.

Two sweet girlies decided to make our deck their home. Mosquitoes are a big problem where we live and we had to get them protected. This was the best bang for the buck. I’ve ordered from 79Pets several times and while delivery is not fast it is very consistent.

After Seresto collars failed to get rid of fleas, I didn't know where to turn. I saw a post on a page I follow (Kentucky Kitty Cats) saying that they use Nexgard Combo for the cats they shelter. I decided to try it and IT WORKS!

Last year, I made a visit to the vet. I told them that Kattie/cat had ear mites. They gave me an ointment costing $80canadian. I used it up and purchased another bottle. $160. total not including the cost of the vet visit. No results. The ear mites have been there for a long time. Canadian vets have control of what is sold in Pet stores and you cannot purchase off the shelf products not recognized by them. I jumped at the chance to purchase your produce with a recommended 100% effectivity. I was willing to try, but was suspicions. After a month there was still a little scratching but after 6 weeks, the mites are gone and the scratching is gone. Thank you very much for this mite solution. I recommend it heartily. Harry P.S. Do not tell the Canadian vets as they will outlaw your product.
